America is a beacon of freedom around the world. We believe that when others experience the freedoms we cherish, exercise the democracy that is our right, and live by a Constitution that binds all the rule of law, our world becomes more prosperous and our own people more safe. Thanks to Republican leadership spanning decades, our nation has led the way in promoting rights of people with disabilities. By ratifying the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, our nation would take an important step toward spreading freedom and opportunity. On July 26, 2012 – the 22nd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the CRPD was voted out of the Foreign Relations Committee by a vote of 13-5. Yet, it is being attacked with unfounded claims that it is a threat to our nation’s sovereignty and even to parental rights. Including CRPD ratification in this party’s platform would send a strong message that this is a national priority and that party support remains steadfast. On behalf of AAPD and the millions of Americans with disabilities who have so much at stake in decisions this esteemed body will make, I thank you for the opportunity to present our proposals.
